PANIC ON BEARTOOTH PASS : Late afternoon we took the wrong turn which delayed us a good hour. Exiting from the NE side of Y.S we headed for our bed for the night. We were concerned that both Cooke City & Silvergate were all fully booked. Our petrol was below quarter full so we opted for Red Lodge approx. 25 miles away Unaware of the terrain we were about to encounter as we took off over the formidable "Beartooth Pass." . Picture the scene, Roadworkers had removed 70% of the road surface so we were driving on gravel with no central lines thro clouds at 20 mph which took about 2 hours, & the petrol gauge was bleeping & flashing continuously. Finally a tired & mentally distraught Mike reached Red Lodge & was even quite happy paying an extortionate price for B & B at the lovely Beartooth Hideaway Motel.
